Chondrolysis in Arthritis

چکیده

Articular cartilage is composed of cells surrounded by a matrix of protein-chondroitin sulphate complex. It is nourished by diffusion from the synovial fluid. It is probable that synovial fluid is a dialysate of plasma, to which another mucopolysaccharide-protein complex containing hyaluronic acid-has been added by synovial cells. Synovial fluid does not contain fibrinogen (Ropes and Bauer 1953) unless the permeability of adjacent vessels is increased by trauma or inflammation. After these events fibrin clots may be found but they do not persist. What is the mechanism by which fibrin is removed from joint surfaces? Our own studies have shown that whenever there is fibrinogen there is plasminogen in synovial fluid; Astrup (personal communication) has demonstrated the presence of plasminogen activator in synovial tissue, and I have found that cartilage per se will also activate plasminogen (Fig. 1). Conditions such as trauma and inflammation that

Incidence and risk of chondrolysis in Denmark: A nationwide population-based study

BACKGROUND Chondrolysis is a rare disease with destruction of cartilage of joints. Incidence and risk factors have not been studied in a formal epidemiologic population-based setting. METHODS We used the Danish National Registry of Patients (NRP) covering all Danish hospitals to identify all cases of chondrolysis from 1994 to 2008. Incidence rates were estimated using the general population a...

Chondrolysis of the Hip following Septic Arthritis: A Rare Complication of Magnetic Resonance Arthrography

Magnetic resonance arthrography (MRA) is commonly used to detect labral tears of the hip. Complications of MRA are unusual and include minor reactions such as chemical synovitis and urticaria. This paper presents a rapidly progressive chondrolysis of the hip in a young patient after arthrography. The patient had suffered from acute septic arthritis and was treated by emergent arthroscopic surge...

Postsurgical glenohumeral arthritis in young adults.

BACKGROUND Chondrolysis has been reported as a sequela of arthroscopic shoulder surgery. Although the causes have yet to be fully elucidated, basic science and clinical evidence suggest a multifactorial origin. Surgical treatment in young patients with glenohumeral chondrolysis is particularly challenging, with little outcome data. HYPOTHESIS Glenohumeral chondrolysis has several causes and p...

Chondrolysis of the tibial plateau caused by articular aspergillosis after ACL autograft reconstruction: management with a fresh osteochondral allograft: a case report.

A rthroscopically assisted reconstruction of the anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) is a common and effective method for treatment of anterior knee instability following ACL injury. Annually, an estimated 250,000 ACL injuries are diagnosed and approximately 100,000 ACL reconstructions are performed in the United States. Chondrolysis is an extremely rare but devastating complication following ACL ...
